that's a good one.  I always liked their first album, it took balls to do that when the rest of the English scene had gone punk or new wave by that time.  I also like their live album, Live Alchemy", and think "Making Movies" is pretty good, too.  There's tons of live stuff from'79 on youtube, I saw that one, "Six Blade Knife", "Once Upon A Time In The West", "Water Of Love" and a couple of others.  Back when both Knopflers were in the band, and original drummer Pick Withers.  Awesome stuff.

Friday night out in the shed:

Jefferson Starship_Red Octopus(total hippie record)

Yes_Yes Songs(a triple album, which folds out, and has a cover which is divided into 3 seperate but artistically related psychedelic scenes depicting the coast of some cosmic ocean.  The album cover itself is literally capable of standing on its own. When unfolded it can be shaped into a square, a triangle or a jagged line.  The 8 panels of scenery can be changed according to the shape and direction of the fold and would be suitable for use as a background in a psychedelic puppet show or something...very cool...especially stoned)

Tonight(Sat.):

John Coltrane_A Love Supreme

Thelonius Monk Quartet with John Coltrane_At Carnegie Hall

On Deck:

Miles Davis_A Tribute to Jack Johnson

Pete Townsend - White City
The soundtrack to Oh Brother Wherefore Art Thou
Modest Mouse - The Moon and Antarctica
Joe Cocker Live

I was rummaging through my CDs to change the six that were in my Car's CD player and came across these rarely played (by me) CDs. I thought something different would be a nice change.

The soundtrack to Oh Brother Wherefore Art Thou

First off, I love the movie, so many great lines and songs and metaphors all through it.  One night when it was on t.v. I sat and watched it and tried to take notes but I couldn't keep up.  I either need to learn short hand or get it on dvd.

Big Rock Candy Mountain, written and performed by Harry McClintock,  recorded in 1928.  Easily one of the top 100 songs of the century.  I mean, seems like a shoe-in to me. It's one of the very first songs I ever remember playin' on my own turntable, in my own bedroom, when I was just but a wee lad(holding my hand about 3 feet above the floor), before I ever went to any fucked up schools.  It was a childs plastic portable turntable.  Real cheap but functional and sturdy.  It had a handle and I used to carry it around with me.  I had a whole stack'a kids 45s I used to listen to all the time.  "Puff the Magic Dragon"... that an' "The Ol' Lady Who Swallowed the Fly(I don't know why, she swallowed the fly...I guess she'll die.)"  "Froggy Went A-courtin(and he did ride, uh-huh...uh-huh...).

Yeah, I liked good music from a long time back.  Been puttin needles to vinyl all my born days, ... so I have.

Several good songs on that O Brother soundtrack; "O Death" one of 'em.  I like Allison Krauss and Emmy Lou too.  And of course "Man of Constant Sorrow", which is previously known to me by Dylans' version.

About "You Are My Sunshine".  We had to sing that in group.  I still like the song but I can't help associating it with the memories of $tr8.

John Coltrane_A Love Supreme

A truly great record, this one has gotten me through some bleak times, Coltrane's masterpiece.  There is an African Methodist church in California that views Coltrane as a saint.  I think they're right.

I'd like to hear this one.  Coltrane is the man!

That's a live album, isn't it? I used to have that LP when I was 14--I loved it! Steve Howe was my favorite guitarist back then. "Siberian Khatru" on that album is a good example of how well he could play...
