Some most enlightened listening going on. How many illegitimate bastards did Screaming Jay produce at last count? 70, 80? I went to the website his family was using to round up all of his bastards from around the globe and offered up my white mug as a transmitter of Jay's DNA. It is possible, I can shriek a passable "Feast of the Mau-Mau"
Right back atcha there, ZA. You've definitely got exquisite taste in soundage yourself, and I've certainly enjoyed much of the music I've listened to on your recommendation.
Personally, the apex of my Screaming Jay Hawkins impersonation is a charmingly heartfelt rendition of "Constipation Blues", and a bordering-on-ethnic-slur-territory singalong during "I Love Paris".
I thought of you tonight at Hastings, RTP. There was a copy of Daddy Longhead's Supermasonic in the 4 for a dollar bin. Such a treasure amongst the New Kids On The Block solo albums and shit like that there. I might go back and get it for my step son.
Wow, haven't heard the name Daddy Longhead in quite a while. I remember listening to that one back in the early 90s with a select group of friends. Another bizzare-o Butthole Surfers side project is a techno thing called The Jack Officers. Not as interesting as Daddy Longhead by far, it's still worth a listen if you are a fan of Gibby, Paul Leary, and co. Oh, and btw, I thought of you the other day when I was in Hyde & Zeke (a local record store a friend of mine owns) and saw a vinyl copy of
Blank Generation by Richard Hell and the Voidoids. Really, I did. Of course, I think of Froderick whenever I hear The Damned on the radio (pirated Sirius rocks.......), and I often think of Miller Newton when I take a morning dump, so don't get too excited over it........
Anyway,
The Good Life - Help Wanted Nights
Tobin Sprout - Moonflower Plastic
Cornhole - Down By the Glory Hole
Junior Kimbrough - You Better Run
Hasil Adkins - Out To Hunch
Glossary - How We Handle Our Midnights. Excellent Murfreesboro band. Should have been a bust-out album, but the New Kids solo records killed a lot of musical appetites..
Watching:
Guided By Voices - The Who Went Home And Cried. I wish the fucker would.
More stuff I'll have to check out. Haven't heard of any of those artists, with the exception of Hasil Adkins and GBV. I used to have some Guided By Voices on vinyl,
Fast Japanese Spin Cycle, and a 7" 33 rpm sampler of Ohio bands, it had GBV's "Stabbing A Star" on it, along with some lame ass song by The Ass Ponys and some other, even more forgettable band. In addition to the GBV song, there was another good song on it, "North Green" by Appalachian Death Ride (bonus points for the cool name. I saw them in Jax, FL on a Tuesday night about ten years ago. Cool band, they brought the RAWK!!!!) Speaking of The Who (the band, not the shithead), I heard their version of "Hall Of The Mountain King" last night. Good shit. HAve a good one, ZA. I'm about to get stoned and tune into Pandora, so I'll have a nice set list to post here later.......
