why do i feel bad for this???

i came home from work this afternoon, and i went inside my apartment....my boyfriend and i went to walk the dog when he noticed 3 butterflies drawn on my car...ok, no biggie....except one of them was carved in with a stick....i know which little girls did it, and i know they meant no harm, but i was so freaking angry that i headed straight to the office to let the manager know.....as soon as i gave the stick found right by my new butterflies...to the manager, she went to their apartment to talk to them......i know it's no big deal, but why do i feel so bad about it?

the butterflies are cute and all, but not on the hood of my car

I would have flown off the handle if somebody carved into my paint job. Regardless of their age. Their parents should have to pay for a new paint job. I would have done worse than going to the office mgr. I would have called the police and filed a report (especially for insurance purposes).

I say, don't waste your energy feeling guilty over complaining to management. The little girls that did this property damage need to learn consequence before their petty thing turns into a big thing.

You feel bad because you know it will cause distress to the children punished. They will be punished because they need to learn about actions and consequences. You feel bad because you have compasion and would lessen their pain if you could because that's what compasionate people do. It's ok to do what is best for the children as long as it is tempered with kindness. That gives your compasion purpose even if it doesn't eliminate their discomfort in learning, it can help even if that help was that you didn't hunt them down and throw rocks at them. The harshest learned lessons in life are not always the best. Every act of kindness counts and if you hadn't felt bad you would have less fuel for your next act of kindness.

Ya know, whenever I run into conflict w/ kids, it's usually got some damned thing to do w/ my kids. So I get intel from the kids, advise them and see how it goes. If it's getting out of hand, we'll take the kid(s) in question, talk to the parents and the other kids. We don't suggest what they should do about it, not our place. We just tell them how we see it and ask them what they know about it.

So far it's worked out. Only had a problem about three times, and each time a different one or two of the adults in residence would come talk it over, exchange thanks and go on their way. People tend more to act really decent if you start off expecting it.

That is extreme...I am surprised you would say such a horrible thing when there are reasonable alternatives available. You should be ashamed!

Here is one reasonable alternative you could have come up with if you weren't so angry and hostile...  Kill just one of them and then while standing over the body with a bloody baseball bat, stare the others in the eye and tell them "touch my fucking car again, and your next".

See...it isn't hard to be reasonable if you try.
