Rolling my eyes on the journey article- John is so not qualified to be doing this it astounds me... a journey is his solution to kids who are sturggling? let me hit the snooze button- get back to me when that same old mantra goes away.
Our experience has nothing to do with whatever metaphorical bs he speaks of. I HATED that metaphor speak- as if lifes problems can be resolved in that context- he provides kids with his own made up framework from which they may work things out. The ony problem is that framework has no bearing on what the child is actually experiencing nor does it have anything to do with the true complexities of the real world.
UNderstanding how to bring these kids into their own involves understand, in part, the complex conditions under which these kid have to grow up in. Johns insertion of culture in a school that is mostly about fear and submission is a smoke screen at best- just to add this feeling of nature and earth, of naturalness to a process that's only natural if your Hobbes. That is, only natural if you believe that power and domination/coercion is the way to set someone on 'the right path'
Thanks goddess, for this. I attended school with Kristie and know they are supporters of MMS and other programs that engage in ethically questionable practices as I've heard anecdotally. They are firm believers in the power of capitalism to create inovative programs that should not be interfered with by the gov't for fear of 'tainting' these programs b/c apparently there is a lack of understanding by CPS, etc as to what are acceptable methods to help kids grow and what is abusive. So, in other words they appear to be on board with NATSAP, preferring to self-regulate b/c, of course, they know best- they are the innovators of this booming industry and, really, who needs to document the effectiveness? PhD's all around are taking note and hopefully, with enough outcry, there will be some accountability. But guys like Lon don't help matters.
