the hotel in california

On a dark desert highway
Cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas
Rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance
I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy, and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself
This could be Heaven or this could be Hell
Then she lit up a candle
And she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor
I thought I heard them say

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely place (background)
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year
Any time of year (background)
You can find it here
You can find it here

Her mind is Tiffany twisted
She's got the Mercedes bends
She's got a lot of pretty, pretty boys
That she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard
Sweet summer sweat
Some dance to remember
Some dance to forget
So I called up the Captain
Please bring me my wine
He said
We haven't had that spirit here since 1969
And still those voices are calling from far away
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely Place
Such a lovely Place (background)
Such a lovely face
They're livin' it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise
What a nice surprise (background)
Bring your alibies

Mirrors on the ceiling
Pink champagne on ice
And she said
We are all just prisoners here
Of our own device
And in the master's chambers
They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives
But they just can't kill the beast
Last thing I remember
I was running for the door
I had to find the passage back to the place I was before
Relax said the nightman
We are programed to recieve
You can check out any time you like
But you can never leave

There was a rumor floating around Elan about this song being a coded song about Elan.

You see, it seems Glen Frey paid for putting his little brother  in Elan and used to come visit him. The kid struggled hard there and committed suicide sometime after leaving. He was a resident of Elan six

Strange, Eh?

whether it is really about Elan or not, there are some strange program like references there and the Eagles had a connection to Elan thru Frey's little brother.

anyway, here is a brief description...

and here is the legend as relates to the song.

I hear that this song is a favorite of Jay Kay at Tranquility Bay.  He likes to tell the kids "you can check out any time you like but you can never leave".

According to the Urban Legends site (www.snopes.com) :

The real Hotel California is not a place; it is a metaphor for the west coast music industry and its effect on the talented but unworldy musicians who find themselves ensnared in its glittering web.

It is one of those songs that are so unspecific, that you can interpret it almost any way you want. (btw, snopes is good, but they can't know everything).

I just find it interesting the connection to Elan and then the program type stuff in there. Do I think it is about Elan? Probably not. Were any of the ideas lifted from Frey's experience with Elan? Who knows?

 Not I....

You know, I just read the Snopes version and remembered reading that many years ago when I first heard of this Elan/hotel california connection.

Snopes interpretation is as good as any, but it is based on some loose statements made by Frey.

I think the real meaning of the song would need to be explained by Glen Frey, but then again, songs kind of take on their own meaning to those that listen and interpret them on their own.

Unless of course you watch "the video" which ruins all indpendent visualizations of music, imo

Don Henley went to the University of North Texas in Denton, like me.  That's how he got the band name  "The Eagles".  The Mean Green North Texas Eagles.  We smoked alot of mean green while I was there.  There is some football movie about the place with Kathy Ireland, Sinbad, Quantim Leap guy.  Hey and my High School was in Friday Night Lights, Midland Lee.

Greg, you will develope a better taste in music after I get you spun. You'll be jamming some punk.
