No, Jerry Vancil and his sister were in the flagship Straight in Saint Pete in 1977. He escaped and got to the Saint Pete Times. As you know, his story is not unusual (a girl in the Springfied camp up here had her finger broken from being pulled back too far in one of these alignment sessions.) What is remarkable is that many of the kids admitted to a reporter that they had patted Jerry, but these were pats of love, not physical blows that Jerry recalled having. These classmates recalled doing this act of kindness out of love, because they cared enough for Jerry that they didn't want to see him destroy himself on drugs. I believe Jim Hartz (Dr. Newton's predecessor) even said the incident may have occurred but not the way Jerry recalled it.
There was to be an investigation--maybe even leading to a criminal investigation, but Jerry disappeared. The HRS rep wound up getting fired during this controversial period in Straight's history (then again all periods in Straight's history are controversial.)
No Jerry is not your guy. I have a picture of him which I'll get to you as soon as I can get my scanner to work again.
