: : From deposition of Miller Newton on 2-23-83 for the Fred Collins’ trial:

: : Q. Now you do recommend that they [host home parents] should lock the bedroom doors, do you not?
: : A. Not here in Florida. There are other states in which the issue of locking the door is not an issue as long as there is a way to escape, like kicking the window out.

: : "They told us in parent Rap to lock the bedroom doors from the outside. Then the state came down on them so they scolded us in GROUP for locking the kids in."
: : Frank S., a former parent at Straight-Springfield

: When I was in, bedroom doors got locked, oldcomer beds got pushed in front of bedroom doors, fire alarms were installed and bolt locks were put on the windows. The house had to be approved by staff, before the kids could come home on 2nd phase. Just imagine if the fire marshall had gotton a hold of these houses. My mother still has the bolts on her windows from way back then. We would have been trapped had there ever been a fire. We wouldn't even have been able to get out the windows. Why couldn't he just give a simple and definate "yes." After all Honesty WAS the #1 rule of the program, which included not leaving seemingly small details, right?

:::: dogs are good fun you can walk them and stuff
