The important thing is that people begin to recognize people like these for the loonies they are. : There are some very radical AA groups. I don't think AA as a whole is a cult, but there are individual groups that form cults. She started investigating these boarding schools and found out that many have a reputation for violence and cruelty to children and wrote the book American Gulag--soon to be a motion picture.
