: I find it interesting the author of this article was even aware enough to make the connection between this "School" and Straight. I believe your suggestion of a letter to the editor is quite a good one. hmmm.
Here's mine
Greetings,
I've just read Rhonda Jones' article on the Family Foundation School. Thanks for printing it. It's good to know that rural people are still sensibly skeptical about this sort of thing.
They're dead on correct to be concerned over these people taking over the town. Organizations like these promise parents that they can "straighten out" their child even if the child has no will to be straightened out. There's only one way to do that; by breaking the child's will. And there's no legal way to do that, so it's vital to the survival of these organizations to have some control over the local authorities. Betty Argiros lets her secret slip in the following quote:
"The Argiros family admits that the school has between 7 to 10 runaways a year, but Betty Argiros said most of the students try to either hitch-hike or find the nearest public phone to call the parents to come pick them up."
Now ask yourself why these kids can't call their parents from the "school". She goes on to claim that these kids are not dangerous or out to hurt anyome. She's probably right. They're probably not dangerous when they get there. But anyone can be dangerous if driven to desperation. And, having spent 2 years in a similar institution, I can tell you that on some occasions, I would have been more than willing to hurt anyone who stood between me and the outside. As I read this, I wondered if the Argiros family actually started these rumors in order to create a hostile buffer zone around the school to enhance their security or if this just fell in their laps. Her attitude is pretty aparent in this quote:
"“If they shot the gun up in the air and scared them, that would be all right. In fact, they might be doing us a favor,” she joked. “But, all we can do is surrender that to God and hope that nothing ever happens.”"
Surrender to God? Is that how a responsible adult responds to putting children in harm's way?
If the place does go up, I hope and pray that Mr. Kelly or any other neighbor who happens across a kid who's determined and lucky enough to escape would be more than happy to let them use the phone to contact their parents.
